This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
