Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
