Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then discovered many other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Officials say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.

A high-ranking representative said the attack rendered him speechless and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
